Excessive urination in dogs is a cause of worry. This is not only an indicator of behavioral traits like anxiety or ear-marking territory alone but of an underlying health problem. A weather change, frequent drinking of water, intake of certain foods, infections or over doing certain exercises can also stimulate excess urination.
Health problems which cause this condition are:
• Urinary infection: Canine cystitis is common in female dogs due to the bladder being short and broad. Here, the infection causes inflammation of the urinary bladder which induces frequent urination. The walls of the lower portion of the tract or the nerve endings in the bladder get infected. The younger dogs are more prone due to under developed or weak immune system. The dogs show symptoms like attempting to urinate often, appearance of blood with urine, or licking the genitals.
• Excessive consumption of water: Due to health problems, a dog may tend to drink water excessively after an exercise routine or in summer season.
• Imbalance of hormones: When estrogen levels in the older female dogs become low, the kidney does not concentrate the urine effectively. This causes frequent urination. Severe cases may lead to dehydration.
• Stones in the bladder: Small sized stones develop in the bladder either due to improper food habits or crystallization of high levels of minerals in the urine. This condition can cause frequent urination.
• Diabetes: When the sugar level increases, the dogs drink water often causing frequent urination.
• Cushing’s disease: In this disorder seen in older dogs, excessive production of adrenal hormones cause frequent urination.
